Best Vegan Curly Hair Products To Add To Your Curly Girl Routine

As many of us in the curly hair community know, finding the perfect vegan curly hair products can be quite the challenge! Our hair is as unique to us as our fingerprints so we must learn how best to look after it.

For hair to reach its full potential, we must nourish it. This means using products with organic, natural ingredients, avoiding sulphates, parabens, silicons, synthetic fragrances, and alcohol. Though some of the products mentioned on this list don’t hit the mark on all of those things, just the exclusion of a few of those ingredients makes for instantly happier hair and a reduced environmental impact!  At Wearth, you can shop a diverse range of UK made haircare products that are 100% vegan and cruelty free – click here to view our full haircare range.

When searching for curly hair products, it is useful to find your curl type, hair porosity and hair density. A quick internet search will give you the tools in which to learn so. This information will inform the ingredients best suited for your hair- the products that contain them, and the regularity of their application. Another important factor is the damage to your hair. Heat, bleach and colour can be quite harmful, but with the right care, you can avoid chopping it all off and save those curls!

I have type 3A hair and have been cruelty-free and vegan for the last 7 years. My hair has been through it all- (years of bleach, terrible box dye, so many hackings at with scissors…) and though natural now, it is still very dry and frizzy when not taken proper care of. I feel like I have tried every sustainable shampoo and conditioner under the sun in those years, and have therefore finally found the products that work best for me. They are all under £20 each, sustainably produced and certified cruelty-free so you can look out for the planet as you look after your hair.

Haircare personally tried, tested and loved.

Just squeeze a handful out, lather well, working it into the roots, and wash out. As curly girls, we only need to wash our hair every 7-10 days, depending on our texture, curl type, and lifestyle, so this clean must be a deep one! Use your fingertips, nails or a wide-tooth comb to work the shampoo into those roots and massage your scalp doing so. This will stimulate the hair follicles and encourage hair growth so enjoy it. If you’re using a lot of product or dry shampoo during the week you might have product build-up, so a second lather may be necessary. Do not fear though, the ingredients in the shampoo are gentle and don’t strip your hair of all the natural oils.

Vegan options: Raw shea butter, Moisture retention. And Jamaican Black Caster Oil, Strengthen and restore

Luxuriously silky, these conditioners will keep your hair soft and shiny all day. Simply massage a blob of it into your hair after shampoo, or use as a co-wash during the week without shampooing; working it in from tip to root. Tie your hair into a bun and leave it in for 5 to 10 minutes to marinate, allowing it to penetrate the hair shaft, and wash your bod in the meantime. The longer it sits, the more moisturised your hair will be, so have a groove, shave your legs if you’re that way inclined, practice your singing, and then wash out with tepid water. For added benefits leave 20% of it in as a leave-in conditioner.

Strengthen & Restore Styling Lotion, Smoothie and Leave-In

These products right here! Absolute game-changers. They define curls and leave them completely frizz-free. No mean feat for hair like ours. I work these products into my hair when it is about half dry, taking half inch strands and raking through a pea-sized amounts of each. I then brush through my hair with a Denman brush, ensuring full coverage and an even application. To style, I’ll twist out the strands to encourage perfect ringlets, finger coiling; or to let my curls form more freely, just scrunching up the hair in small handfuls, often with my head upside down to encourage volume.

Eco Credentials: Free from sulphates, silicones, parabens and mineral oil. They are cruelty-free but not confirmed vegan. This is under review.

Price: £4.00- £9.99

This shampoo does a decent job as any, leaving hair feeling squeaky clean. Unscented and on the more affordable side it is ideal for those getting into natural hair care. Use as normal.

Price: £4.99 – £9.99

This conditioner is my top pick of all the conditioners here. I simply could not live without it.

In an ideal world, my hair would be flowing free and wild, silky and unkept, but in reality, it is up out of my face in buns or ponytails almost most of the time, causing it to knot and tangle easily. Friction from winter hats and pillowcases, even faux-silk ones can make matts worse, so de-tangling and manageability help from a conditioner is essential.

Applied liberally to small sections and left to soak for 5+ minutes, your comb will glide through, with a bit of encouragement. I work from hair end to root, an inch or so at a time to avoid breakage as much as possible, and apply more product as necessary.

Styling Product:

Price: £7.99

This curl cream works beautifully for smoothing frizz and deep conditioning the hair on the daily. I have very fine and relatively thin hair and I don’t like to weigh it down with too much product. Therefore I personally use this more as a leave-in conditioner of sorts. After conditioning, I use a £2 coin-sized dollop of it on sopping wet hair and rake it through using a comb. This dilutes it, and brings my curls to life immediately. As the hair dries naturally, the product protects the cuticle, smoothing it together, eliminating frizz. It can also be used as a curl re-vitiliser during the week too, in a spray bottle 20/80 with water to bring curls back to life.

Price: £7.49 – £12.99

Lather, rinse, repeat. We know the score by now! The different shampoos have different active ingredients that really do the job they are supposed to, leaving your hair very soft. I have tried the whole range and rotate them to my needs.

Price: £7.49 – £9.99

This conditioner is very soothing and recyclable packaging is equally as soothing to the soul and your environmental fears. I have found my hair struggles with this a wee bit for a weekly conditioner as it’s not the best detangler, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t do a good job. If you’re conditioning your hair a few times a week, combing it regularly to avoid tangles, it’ll work a treat. I partially like to use it after sea swimming as my hair gets very dried out and needs those vitamins desperately! Wavy/ loosely curly girls who don’t need too much product, this one is for you!

Once it has all melted down, you can stir it together to create a smooth cream, and store it this way, using as any other bottled conditioner.

This works excellently as a leave-in conditioner too, or for creating a protective barrier for swimming in chlorinated water.
