26 Nov Introducing: Reusable Christmas Crackers

Christmas is often seen as a time of unnecessary excess and waste as we cook as much food as possible, buy as much as possible and wrap everything around us in plastic tinsel and cheap wrapping paper. The Independent recently revealed some shocking statistics: around 100 sq km of plastic wrapping paper, more than 100,000 tonnes of plastic packaging and a couple-million turkeys will be binned on Christmas Day alone. This level of waste is not necessary to enjoy the festive season and it is always great to find ways to reduce our impact on the earth while we celebrate this wonderful holiday season.

One new product that we have just brought in at Wearth is definitely going to help with that: reusable Christmas crackers.

The Crackers

The crackers are made by a company called 2 Green Monkeys. They are made of cotton on a hard cardboard inner tube, and once you’ve had the chance to ‘pull the cracker’ you can unroll the cotton squares to use as napkins. 2 Green Monkeys give you the unique chance to personalise your crackers with Monograms or printed words. Here are some examples:

Another great benefit of these eco-friendly Christmas crackers is that they give you the chance to use your own little gifts of homemade chocolate, organic lip balm, or any of the suggestions below, to fill them with. This means that you don’t end up with the pointless plastic tat which many of us throw away year upon year.

Facial cleansing pads

£9.25 for a pack of 4

These ivory coloured reusable pads are a great plastic-free and reusable alternative to disposable makeup removal wipes and cotton balls. They are purposefully designed to be exfoliating and shaped to ensure they can get to the hard to reach places near your nose and eyes.

At 3” in diameter, they can be slipped into a Christmas cracker along with a sweet treat to make the perfect cracking surprise.

Organic Lip Butter

£12 for a pack of 3

This rich and creamy lip butter is handmade in small batches in Scotland using natural, vegan and cruelty-free ingredients. They come in a number of flavours:

Original (unflavoured).

Chocolate Peppermint.

Chocolate Vanilla.

Citrus Burst.

Minty Fresh.

And each £12 set gives you the choice of 3, allowing you to pick the perfect cracker treat for a friend or family member.

Reusable Cotton Rounds

£5.50 for 5

These smaller cotton pads are also a great alternative to make-up wipes. For those with certain skin types that don’t require regular exfoliation, these softer pads are absolutely ideal. They come in packs of 5 or 10 and can be sent along with a storage pouch to ensure your pads stay nice and fresh and clean.

Tabitha Eve reusable makeup pads are made to order and cut by hand. Slight variations in size and shape may occur

Organic Shaving Oil

£11.99

Old Faithful, the bran behind this product, was set up by Gareth who after a long term back injury discovered the benefits of essential oils and went on to set up an organic produce based company to share the love and comfort.

These smaller pots of shaving oil are the perfect size for a cracker and come in 3 distinct scents: Fruity, Fresh and Woody.

Biodegradable toothbrush

£2.95

Over 99% of the toothbrushes in the world are made of plastic, the majority of which cannot be recycled and ends up in landfills or into our waterways and oceans. This is a lot and considering the dentist tells us to replace our toothbrush each month, it seems like a difficult number to combat.

One way to reduce the plastic impact, however, is to get into the habit of buying biodegradable toothbrushes, like this one from The White Teeth Box. Start one of your lucky Christmas dinner guests off by popping this biodegradable toothbrush into their Xmas cracker this year.

Aromatherapy Soy-Wax Melts

£8

These soy wax melts are the perfect accompaniment to chilly January evenings spent relaxing at home by the fire. You can get a pack of around 10 for £8 and slip one into every cracker, or just fill up a lucky one or two cotton Cossacks with as many as will fit!

There are 3 scents to choose from, each with their own unique qualities. Click the link in the title above and make your selection now.

Nail and Cuticle Oil

£8.50

Blushberry Botanical’s Nail and Cuticle Oil is the perfect defense from wintery weather which dries out our hands. Coming in an enchanting lavender and lemon scene, the product is made of a rich blend of plant oils which with regular use, this 90% organic and 100% natural oil will help increase nail strength and flexibility.

Like the lip-balms above, which are also made by Blushberry Botanicals, all of the products are made in the North East of Scotland and use as little plastic as possible.
