Sharing our brands’ stories is a great way to celebrate their beautifully sustainable products and ethics with our community. We recently had the pleasure of catching up with Carly and Greg from Cascayde to find out more about their inspiring dedication to raising a family while running an eco-conscious business.
Swapping plastic for paper, Cascayde makes gift wrapping gorgeously sustainable. Featuring consciously-cool paper tape and wrap, Cascayde designs the ultimate eco-friendly swaps without compromising on style. Designed to make plastic-free living as accessible as possible, this brand is combating plastic waste one paper tape at a time.
Based in Glasgow and made in the UK, Cascayde is a family affair. When Greg and Carly are not at the office or looking after their delightful daughter Sienna, you can find them at the seaside playing Volleyball. The couple even surprised their family and friends with a sports-themed wedding, wearing retro sports kits and playing Netball, Volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee into the evening.
Fun and adventure are part of the brand’s ethos and designing the ultimate eco-conscious alternatives for everyday living is part of their mission to help reduce plastic waste.
What inspired you to start your brand?
We have always been concerned with the amount of single-use plastic and waste in the world around us and when we decided to start a family business together, it was always going to be something that had the environment in mind.
Cascayde began as a sideline for us and grew busier during the first lockdown, which gave us the confidence to take the plunge and go full time. We are also motivated by having flexibility in our home and working life and have tried to grow a business that allows both of us to work while raising a family.
Can you talk us through an average day at Cascayde?
We work in shifts to manage child care. We are lucky to have a great office and warehouse space close to our house, which is close enough to cycle to! Generally, one of us arrives at our office space around 9 am and picks the orders and takes care of any admin throughout the morning. The other then takes over the early afternoon, checks the orders and books them out on Royal Mail Click and Drop, which we are big fans of.
Stevie our friendly Royal Mail driver then picks up the postbags around 4 pm when the afternoon shift winds down. In the evening we can then catch up with any social media posts and customer service messages.
Why is incorporating sustainability and ethics important to you and how do you do it?
Sustainability and ethics are a part of our everyday lives and routines. We try to make good choices wherever we can. Our business mission is to make it easier for people to embrace low plastic living and we believe in the importance of making it easy for as many people as possible to make good choices, whether that is as simple as swapping a plastic packaging tape for a paper one.
Can you give us some insight into the making process of your products?
We produce our paper tapes in the UK with natural, biodegradable products and vegan inks.
If you could give one piece of advice about sustainability, what would it be?
Always take a minute to stop and think – is there a way to do this better? Can I walk today or cycle? Do I need this? And if I do, can I use a plastic-free alternative?
What do you feel were the biggest highlights for your brand in 2021?
The arrival of a new team member was 2021’s highlight. Our Daughter Sienna joined us at 1:05 am on Saturday 27th November 2021. November is definitely the busiest time of year for us at Cascayde when you sell eco-friendly packaging – poor family planning on our part!
However, we always crossed our fingers for a weekend baby and we got our wish. Carly worked on Friday the 26th while in labour. We went to the hospital after all the orders were sent out and everything went smoothly from there. Greg was back in the office on Monday and Carly was back in from Wednesday. We enjoyed some family time and a well-earned rest once we shut for the festive period.
What’s next for your brand? Is there anything coming up in the future that we should keep an eye out for?
Lots of new paper tape designs will be launching in 2022, as well as our new wholesale paper tape website.
