At Wearth, we carefully select brands that are making a positive impact on the planet, and we love being able to share their inspiring stories with our readers. Getting to know our brands is a great way to celebrate their values and beautiful products. Recently we had the pleasure of catching up with entrepreneur Kavita Basi, founder of sportswear brand ReflexOne and vegan trainer brand Ration.L.
Two different brands, one founder and one mission – Ration.L and ReflexOne set up shop during the pandemic. With sustainability and ethics at the heart of both businesses, Kavita challenged the status quo and created gorgeously stylish yet sustainable footwear and sportswear. Ration.L focuses on the perfect pair of kicks. Using vegan leather, these cruelty-free trainers are the ultimate sustainable fashion statement. ReflexOne uses recycled materials to create the perfect supporting and sculpting activewear. And every purchase gives 5% of profits to The Brain & Spine Foundation Charity, an organisation close to Kavita’s heart after suffering a brain haemorrhage in 2015.
From deliciously soft vegan-leather trainers to ethically made sports bras, these two British designed brands champion sustainability at every corner, and Kavita gives us an insight into the life of these two eco-conscious brands.
What inspired you to start ReflexOne & Ration.L, and how did they come about?
I worked in the industry for over 25 years and could see off-hand the devastating effects to the environment from the fashion industry and started to take steps within the company I worked with to help improve their sustainability. I then suffered a brain haemorrhage, I had an extremely challenging journey of recovery, but it gave me focus on what I wanted to do in life. I published my book, started speaking events and then became Ambassador for three different charities.
I still wanted to make a difference, a much larger impact in the fashion industry, so I decided to leave and focus on creating my own business to ensure the ethics and mission was focused on my values and beliefs. Ration.L trainers and accessories are Vegan & Gender-Neutral, and ReflexOne activewear is made from certified recycled plastic.
Can you talk us through an average day at ReflexOne and Ration.L, how do you manage both businesses?
I have an amazing team that helps me daily as I still suffer from neurological side effects even today from my illness. So my time is precious, and I try and keep it focused to ensure I’m giving the best to both.
Why is incorporating sustainability important to you and how do you do it?
I spent time learning about ethical practices and understanding the certifications needed to ensure that products were made sustainably. We have our own guide tool to help our supply chain follow our code of ethics.
Can you give us some insight into the making process of your products?
We only make products that have a purpose. We keep our ranges to a minimum to avoid wastage or landfills. So when we see a gap in the market, we use this to design and develop our new innovative products. This is tested repeatedly before we bring it to market to ensure its purpose is needed. We also donate 5% profits to the two neuro-charities we support through each sale of a product.
What is your biggest hope for the future of fashion?
I hope that the consumer recognises that ethical fashion is the way to move forward and only buy items that are needed, rather than just being a trend. However, we all want to still look good and enjoy what we wear, so it would be good to have a product that’s ethical and looks good too!
If you could give one piece of sustainability advice, what would it be?
It’s always important to check the label and certification on products before buying into them.
What do you feel were the biggest highlights for your brands in 2021?
We were in Vogue and GQ!! Only a few months after launching, this was very exciting for us.
What’s next for ReflexOne and Ration.L? Is there anything coming up in the future that we should keep an eye out for?
We have a fantastic kickstarter campaign to try and test a new organic sneaker for Ration.L and we are expanding our range on ocean plastic with ReflexOne. We are also looking to collaborate with some celebrities that are focused on making a positive impact in the industry. It’s going to be amazing!
