Setting the intention to create gorgeously soothing, holistic self-care, Veil of Gaia was created in 2020 by Taran-Nina. Inspired by Mother Nature and her family’s traditions, this beautiful brand redesigns natural skincare with a conscience. Veil of Gaia infuses ethically sourced ingredients with healing affirmations to create a soothing and relaxing ritual for the mind, body and soul.
Made with the planet in mind, Veil of Gaia crafts luxuriously eco-conscious products by hand, from biodegradable packaging to responsibly sourced ingredients, this brand focuses on self-care for all.
We had the pleasure of catching up with founder Taran to discover more about her mindful products and the inspiring story behind her brand.
What inspired you to start Veil of Gaia?
The root source of inspiration is Nature itself. Living in such a stress-fuelled world, the slow, intentional, magical process of nature really inspired me. I wanted to create products that infused that same intentional, ‘ritual-like’ energy into other people’s self-care rituals so that we can all slow down, care for ourselves and return to our inner self, mentally, physically and spiritually.
On a more personal note, natural, holistic remedies, spirituality and herbalism have always been such a big part of my life and a true passion of mine since I was a child. My main influences were the women in my life, particularly my mother and grandmother. From my grandmother’s homemade hair remedies to my mother’s books on intentional living and holistic practices, creating my own products became second nature. I’ve been experimenting with natural remedies since I was a teenager, connecting the beneficial properties of flowers, herbs and plants with their metaphysical properties.
I believe it’s not just about the product, it’s about the intention and ritual behind how we use it. This adds a touch of calming energy into our lives, which in today’s world is something we all need.
Can you talk us through an average day at your brand?
An average day would involve getting some posts ready for social media and making the orders that have been made that week. This means cleaning and cleansing my studio space, both physically and energetically and then making the products. This is my favourite part. I’m really in my element when I’m creating! Once everything is made and bottled up, I will get ready to label everything, package them and get them into their little postal bags ready to be dropped off at the post office.
Why is incorporating sustainability and natural ingredients important to you and how do you do it?
Being a brand dedicated to working in alignment and gratitude with nature, trying to be as sustainable as possible just made sense. One of the first things we did was reach out to some charities to ensure that we could give back to mother nature, which is why every time a customer makes an order, a small percentage of that money goes towards planting a tree!
Natural ingredients are so important to us. Anything that can be made by hand is done by hand, whether that’s powdering dried flowers or infusing oils. I believe every ounce of intention in a product is felt when you use it. We also strive to source ingredients ethically and locally when we can, and ensuring that our suppliers are as transparent as possible. Our raw shea butter, for example, is fair trade and supports a women-led corporation in Ghana where the amazing women that produce the butter are paid fairly, ensuring that their families are well looked after.
Can you give us some insight into the making process of your products?
Of course! A lot of the oils are infused for some time beforehand so that the beneficial properties of the plants are fully extracted. We try to produce in super small, slow batches, but sometimes products are made to order, which means measuring out and formulating the products and sending them out. This is why we value time and intention over mass production and ‘quick-making’. As a brand, practising what you preach is essential!
What is the one product from Veil of Gaia you can’t live without?
This is such a hard question, I might have to pick two! It will probably have to be Let It Glow Facial Oil and Aphrodite Healing Salts, both of the very first products I ever formulated. The formulation of the salts came from wanting a really indulgent, healing product that soothed everything from PMS symptoms to everyday aches and pains. The rose otto oil content is the magical ingredient in there, it’s such a pure and powerful oil and truly amplifies the ‘divine goddess’ energy I wanted to create with the salts. I love using these salts and cannot get enough!
The formulation for Let It Glow evolved over time, but the time and intention that went into selecting each ingredient for this oil is the reason why I am so proud of it and the difference it makes on the skin. I don’t think I will ever be able to replace this product, my skin definitely acts up as soon as I stop using it for a while. The ingredients really do their thing!
If you could give one piece of advice about health & wellbeing, what would it be?
It would be to remember that self-care should be a priority, not a luxury. Minimising stress by ensuring that your own cup is full, before pouring into others, is so important, with stress being such a big factor in the progression of ageing, disease and anxieties. This is the very reason why we included affirmations on our labels, to remind those who need it that alignment is just as much about caring for yourself internally as it is about caring for yourself externally too.
What do you feel were the biggest highlights for your brand in 2021?
I would say that some of the biggest highlights for Veil of Gaia were being featured in Vanity Fair, Natural Health Woman and being contacted by so many wonderful companies to collaborate with. On top of this, we joined Wearth in 2021, so that was another amazing opportunity that introduced us to so many other gorgeous brands and lovely customers!
What’s next for Veil of Gaia? Is there anything coming up in the future that we should keep an eye out for?
Definitely. We have some really exciting new products launching very soon that I am looking forward to sharing…some brand-new aromatherapy indulgence! Stay tuned for those!
